The Hijli Detention Camp, located in Hijli in the district of Midnapore West, West Bengal, India, was significant in the struggle against the British Raj in the early 20th century. It was the second one created by the British Government. It was closed in 1937 and was reopened in 1940. In 1942 the camp was again closed and the detainees were transferred elsewhere. The first ______ was established here in May 1950. After completion of the renovation, India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru had this to say at the fist convocation address at ______ in 1956 - "Here in the place of that Hijli Detention Camp stands the fine monument of India, representing India's urges, India's future in the making.
